City staff recommended and the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission voted April 10 to recommend landmark designation for the Pizzitola building at 1138 West Gray Street.
Cara Quigley, a staff preservation reviewer, presented the landmark application and described the property as a one-story brick commercial building with a full-width dual storefront constructed circa 1932, attached to a one-story stucco single-family residence at the rear. Quigley said the two buildings retain strong integrity and meet multiple criteria for landmark designation (staff cited criteria 1, 3, 4, 5 and 8).
Owner Anthony Pizzitola told the commission he seeks a protective landmark designation to preserve both the building and the memory of his parents, Bernadine and Frank Pizzitola. Staff recommended the commission forward the landmark designation to City Council.
A commissioner moved to accept staffs recommendation; another commissioner seconded. The commission recorded a voice vote in favor, and Quigley said the owner is available to answer follow-up questions.
The commissions recommendation will be transmitted to City Council for final action on designation.
