HAHC backs National Register nomination for Swift & Company packing plant in the Heights

The Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission voted on April 10 to recommend that the Texas Historical Commission consider the Swift & Company packing plant at 612 Waverly Street for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
Roman McAllen, the citys historic preservation officer, presented the nomination form and background for the approximately 3-acre site at the southwest corner of the Houston Heights. McAllen said the site contains two extant historic buildings: the main packing plant (incorporating the 1917 packing and refinery buildings and a large 1953 addition) and the 1917 boiler and engine house. He told commissioners the site originally developed as a cottonseed oil refinery campus under Swift and Company.
McAllen said the Texas Historical Commissions State Board of Review meets three times a year and that the next review is scheduled for May 17 at the Fair Park Visitor Center in Dallas. He asked the commission to relay any recommendation from the city to the state board.
A commissioner moved to recommend support for the nomination; another commissioner seconded. The commission voted in favor and directed staff to convey the recommendation to the Texas Historical Commission.
McAllen said the nomination could lead to future reuse planning and that the protected-landmark status the City of Houston already granted to the property last year remains in place.
