The Minnesota House Education Finance Committee adopted a DE1 amendment to the governor’s education budget bill and re‑referred the bill, House File 2433, to the House Ways and Means Committee.
Committee Chair, House Education Finance Committee, opened the meeting and asked for approval of minutes from April 3, which were adopted by voice vote. Representative Joaquin moved House File 2,433 and the DE1 amendment; the DE1 amendment was adopted by voice vote. The committee then renewed the motion to re‑refer House File 2,433 as amended to the Ways and Means Committee; that motion was approved by voice vote.
The action keeps the committee’s work aligned with negotiations with the other legislative body, committee members said. "We are going to be doing a DE today to replace it with forecast adjustment to send to the ways and means committee so that we, stay on track while we're still negotiating," the Chair said. Representative Joaquin told members, "I'd like to move House file 2,433 before us, and I'd also like to move the DE-one amendment." Following consideration, a member announced, "The DE 1 amendment is adopted."
Committee leadership thanked staff from both the committee’s nonpartisan and partisan teams for their work preparing the bill and related materials. The chair listed several staff by name during remarks, including Tim Strom, Kristina Parr, Connor Beckle, Natalie Wavra, Polly Sikbenek, Mars Beltrami, Robin Schmidt, Christine Lawrence, Jody Withers, Janelle Boca and Jacob Cohen, and specifically thanked Vice Chair Mary Frances Clardy for her assistance.
Members said they expect further work on the bill and indicated an informational hearing will be scheduled to allow public testimony once the committee finalizes its language; no date or agenda for that hearing was provided during the meeting.
