Parks staff briefed the commission on existing concession contracts and upcoming renewals during the April 10 meeting, and the commission voted to receive and file the report.
The department said most contracts are current and operating without issue, but the mayoral‑staff update noted two contracts coming up for renewal: the carnival operator (Fiesta Carnival) and veterinary services that support vaccination and mobile clinics. Parks staff said carnivals are a small, specialized market and that operators rarely compete on bids; “As long as that operator… still wants it, kind of the unwritten rule in life is that no one else will bid it,” staff said.
Parks staff described the city’s large vaccination day—one of the busiest for rabies and other pet vaccinations—and explained mobile veterinary providers are limited in the region. Staff said they will pursue renewal with incumbent providers and work on referral lists for spay/neuter services but that in‑house facilities and long‑term spay/neuter services are not feasible for the department.
The commission received and filed the concessions agreement report by voice vote.
