Somerville council endorses statewide effort to complete Mass Central Rail Trail

The Somerville City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution supporting completion of the Mass Central Rail Trail, a proposed multi-community bicycle and walking route that would span roughly 104 miles from Boston-area North Station toward Northampton.
The resolution, sponsored by Councilors Saeed and Ewen Kampen, included an invited public speaker, Alan Moore, co-president of the Friends of the Community Path in Somerville. Moore described two decades of local advocacy to build and extend community trails and asked the council to sign on to a statewide push to complete the corridor so it will connect Boston to Northampton.
Council members praised local advocates and said Somerville's Community Path is a model for other communities. "When it comes to climate resiliency, there are no borders," Councilor Saeed said, arguing the trail would aid traffic mitigation, safety, public health and economic development across multiple municipalities.
The council approved the resolution without recorded opposition and several councilors volunteered to sign on as co-sponsors.
