Taft City School District to complete transitional-kindergarten phase-in in 2025; flags nutrition funding at risk

Dr. Lori Slavin, superintendent of Taft City School District, told the State of the City audience that the district will complete a multi-year phase-in of transitional kindergarten in August 2025 and highlighted federal funding streams that support district programs.
Slavin said the district receives five federal Title programs (commonly called Titles I through V) and also receives funding under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). She identified the district's food and nutrition program as the largest funding source and the one most at risk.
On transitional kindergarten, Slavin said children who turn 4 by Sept. 1 will be eligible beginning in August 2025. She described classroom requirements the district met to accommodate the expansion, including rooms described in the meeting as 1,358 square feet and the district's target class cap of 20 three- and four-year-olds with two adults in the classroom: one certificated teacher and one trained instructional aide.
Slavin also noted that all students currently receive free meals and said district enrollment and staffing remain active areas of focus.
She concluded by thanking the audience and noting that the district is "very busy" with the transition and other ongoing work.
