Superintendent highlights student Feinstein Award, McCourt tribute for crossing guard and Community School renovation progress

Principal Carbonic announced that Chase Corbille, a fifth-grader at Ashton School, was the school's winner of a Feinstein Foundation "golden ticket." The award includes $5,000 for the school and $500 that the student may donate to a charity; Corbille selected Friends of Kids with Cancer.
"He embodies all those traits," Principal Carbonic said of Corbille, speaking of kindness and community service promoted by the Feinstein Foundation. The principal said the foundation aims to promote kindness, end hunger and encourage students to help others.
At McCourt Middle School staff described an outdoor ceremony honoring Dennis Binkowski, the school's crossing guard. McCourt administrator Storm told the committee that students and staff lined Highland Avenue to pay tribute as Binkowski made a final pass by the school, and praised students' respectful behavior during the tribute.
"He was a daily source of warmth, humor, and kindness," Storm said, describing Binkowski's impact on students and staff.
On facilities, district staff reported that Community School's renovation is progressing with the first coat of paint applied in common areas, cabinetry installed in classrooms, the next phase of flooring scheduled during April vacation week, and an above-ceiling inspection completed. The project also includes a new elevator shaft (two floors) and work to replace an old dry well to resolve a persistent water issue at the building's front entrance. Staff estimated that visible progress (walls, flooring, ceilings, windows) will be noticeable in May.
Superintendent Dr. Thornton and staff invited committee members to inspect Community School in May when additional work will be underway.
Ending: Committee members thanked staff for the updates and recognized the combination of community mourning and celebration reflected in the tributes and student recognition.
