Finance director outlines proposed pay-scale increases, CTE national-competition support under review

Tipton County's finance director briefed the board on a proposed two-year pay-scale adjustment that would increase starting teacher pay and provide an aggregate raise across certified instructional staff.

Under the proposal presented, starting teachers' salaries would increase from approximately $47,267 to about $50,005, a roughly 7% increase for that step; the director said the aggregate across all instructional personnel would be roughly a 4% increase though individual increases would vary by lane and step. Staff said the change would affect roughly 295 teachers on the bachelor's lane and about 341 on the master's lane; the finance director said those changes are intended to help recruitment and retention and that further refinements will continue.

The finance director also raised the question of whether the board wants to assist CTE (career and technical education) teams that qualify for national competitions. The district currently reimburses 50% of costs for athletic teams that reach state competition; staff asked whether a comparable contribution should be considered for CTE teams advancing to nationals. No action was taken; finance staff said the question will be discussed during the budget work session and a potential amendment.

Staff also provided routine fund and federal-project reports in the board packet and noted timing items for finalizing the fiscal-year budget. The finance director said COVID-era ESSER funds for the district are fully spent, and the district is projecting state retirement rates and other figures for the May 1 budget deadline.
