WALPOLE, Mass. — Swara Sonchatra, Walpole High School student and the district's representative on FEMA's Youth Preparedness Council, told the School Committee Thursday she will run free community workshops in May on CPR, first aid and home‑alone safety for children and teens.
Sonchatra said the Home Alone Safety workshop will take place Saturday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to noon, and that the CPR and first aid session is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Walpole High School media center. The CPR session will involve the high school nurse, Miss Anderson, and Sonchatra said she is coordinating with the Walpole Police Department for the home‑alone safety portion.
"Really, I'm targeting kids and teens, but anyone can do it," Sonchatra said, adding that parents are welcome at the home‑alone session. She said registration will be handled via a Google form that she will release and that she will work with the recreation department and the library to publicize the sessions.
Committee members praised the initiative and suggested promoting the workshops through school newsletters and the town recreation bulletin. Sonchatra said there is no strict minimum age for the home‑alone safety session, but recommended reasonable judgment by families.
