School committee approves out‑of‑state trips for jump rope and speech & debate teams

WALPOLE, Mass. — The School Committee on Thursday unanimously approved two out‑of‑state field‑trip requests: a June 7 jump‑rope competition for Old Post Road students in Keene, New Hampshire, and a set of speech and debate tournament trips for Walpole High School students to Chicago, New Haven and Fort Lauderdale.
Old Post Road staff requested permission for about 15 to 20 jumpers to attend a competition at Keene Recreation Center on June 7 for speed, double‑Dutch and freestyle events. "We'll be doing things like speed and double dutch and all sorts of freestyle events," the presenter said. A motion to approve the trip passed 6–0–0.
The committee also approved three Walpole High School speech and debate tournament trips: the national NFCL tournament in Chicago in May; the Yale Invitational in New Haven in September; and the Sun Invitational in Fort Lauderdale in January 2026. Coaches said students may miss one to two days of school for travel. A motion to approve the speech and debate trips passed 6–0–0.
Committee members thanked coaches for providing early notice so families can fundraise or plan travel and encouraged staff to provide chaperone information as needed.
