Council lowers speed limit on Maple Street and updates Wylie schools' school-zone boundaries

Council approved reducing Maple Street's speed limit from 50 to 40 mph on a segment approaching Wylie Elementary to enable a 25 mph school zone, and approved related adjustments to school-zone start and end points on Colony Hill to shorten an overly long school zone.
The Abilene City Council approved ordinances to reduce the speed limit on a segment of Maple Street and to refine school-zone boundaries near Wylie Elementary.
Max Johnson, director of Public Works, said Maple Street currently carries a 50 mph posted speed well into the area approaching Wylie Elementary; the council approved reducing a segment from 50 to 40 mph so that the posted limits allow the 25 mph school-zone speed to be in effect during school hours. The 40 mph segment begins about 1,500 feet from Colony Hill and runs to 707 (map reference in staff documents).
A companion ordinance cleans up school-zone signage around the two Wylie schools along Maple and Colony Hill. Johnson said staff will establish an end of school zone for Wylie Elementary and restart a school zone at Wildflower Way to avoid an unnecessarily long continuous school zone between the two campuses.
No members of the public spoke in opposition to the changes. The ordinances passed on final readings.
