Board considers community mailer to encourage medication drop-off; staff to refine plan

The Nye County Water District Governing Board discussed April 10 a community outreach proposal to distribute printed bags encouraging residents to use prescription drop-off programs, an item tied to the district’s community source water protection plan.

Manager Dan Weeks described a proposed mailer of 30,000 printed bags with water-protection messaging and imprinting directing residents to existing drop-off locations (the Nye County Sheriff’s Office and participating pharmacies). Weeks said a partner organization, Daymark/RCI (represented in the meeting by Beck Environmental and other partners), offered to cover the cost of printing; postage (estimated at roughly $7,000–$8,000) would be the district’s share and could be paid from reserves. The printed bag also could be distributed at community events and through partner organizations.

Board members discussed a lower-cost pilot approach: print a limited run (for example, 2,000 bags) and test response before committing to a countywide mailing. Others suggested a targeted postcard campaign and outreach through community events to minimize postage cost and waste. Staff said it would confirm whether partner funders would permit the district to retain printed bags for a smaller pilot and would verify postal imprinting logistics. The board did not vote; Weeks said staff would refine the plan and return with a pilot proposal or a final mailing plan for future board consideration.

The Sheriff's Office already operates an incineration-based drop-off program; the proposed mailer would promote that and other collection points and provide basic instructions for safe disposal. Staff noted the activity furthers community source water protection goals adopted in the district’s plan and that the outreach could be implemented as a one-time pilot or repeated if successful.
