Placerville wildfire safety day to honor late Division Chief Lucas Shepherd; event scheduled April 26

The Placerville Fire Safe Council and city staff told the council April 8 that the city’s Wildfire Safety Day on April 26 will be dedicated to the memory of Division Chief Lucas Shepherd and will include demonstrations and agency tables aimed at home hardening and evacuation preparedness.
Placerville Fire Safe Council representative Mr. Acuna briefed the council on the event at Midtown Mall and said chiefs, firefighters and community agencies from 23 organizations will participate. He said Marshall had planned to have Shepherd as lead planner for the event before his death and that the council and Fire Safe Council received permission from the Shepherd family to dedicate the event to his memory.
Why it matters: The event is intended as public outreach on wildfire risk, mitigation and evacuation procedures for a region that faces recurring fire threats. Organizers said the event will offer hands‑on demos, a fire simulation table and resources for human and large‑animal evacuation.
Mr. Acuna said Cal Fire will provide an engine crew and a hose‑squirting demonstration and will operate a fire simulation table. “Shep was going to be our lead planner this year,” Acuna said, and organizers will have a table to memorialize his contributions and information on how to support his family, including a GoFundMe maintained by the firefighters association.
The event’s organizers confirmed demonstrations will reflect the city’s recently posted draft fire hazard maps and will include scenarios such as a Weber Creek Canyon fire and fire coming out of the north side of the American River canyon. Acuna said South County and a large‑animal rescue team will attend alongside county animal services to answer evacuation questions.
Organizers also thanked city staff (Nick Stone and Dennis Nishihara) for logistical support and said the event will be advertised on a local highway‑50 marquee near Placerville Hardware. The council and members of the public were encouraged to attend; the event is scheduled for April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Midtown Mall.
