Historic preservation commission approves Paradise Western window decal design; chair recuses

The Livingston City Historic Preservation Commission approved on a voice vote a proposed window decal for Paradise Western Company after one commissioner said they could not participate because the business is in their building.

Commission members voted to approve the design as submitted. “I cannot vote on this because it’s my building,” a commissioner told colleagues before the vote. The applicant was not present for the agenda item.

The commission discussed the decal briefly, including whether the vinyl lettering should be applied on the interior or exterior of the windows. One commissioner suggested recommending that the applicant apply the vinyl on the inside to reduce weathering. Another noted the west-side location of the windows and said that side receives less wind and direct sun.

A motion to approve the application passed with no recorded opposition and a three-to-none tally. The commission recorded that one member was recused because of a conflict of interest tied to property ownership.

The commission did not specify additional conditions for the decal beyond the recommendation about interior placement. The applicant was not present to respond to commissioners’ questions at the meeting.

The commission moved on to other items after confirming the vote.
