The Alamance County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a budget amendment (6a / budget amendment 10) on April 7 to accept grant funding and place proceeds into a multiyear county capital or renovations and repair fund for the acquisition of the Austin tract, a property described by staff as providing both a riparian buffer for surface waters and additional buffer for the county landfill.
Staff member Rebecca and parks department staff explained that the parks department had sought three separate grants to support the land purchase and that the acquisition would not be funded from the general fund. Rebecca said the acquisition is only the first step and that subsequent development or management work would likely rely on additional grants.
Commissioners discussed the size of the request and asked that items carrying large dollar amounts not be handled on the consent agenda without prior discussion; the board had removed the item from the consent agenda earlier and later voted to approve it on the regular agenda. A commissioner noted the $4 million‑range size of the request during discussion; staff confirmed the funding is coming from grants and enterprise funds rather than from ongoing general‑fund appropriations.
A motion to approve the budget amendment carried unanimously. Staff placed the grant proceeds into the multiyear capital fund to allow time for future planning and potential grant‑funded development.
