County review of courthouse renovation prioritizes detention upgrades, elevator and courtroom security

The existing courthouse (built in the mid‑1950s) contains multiple deficiencies; the jail closed in February 2019. The team said the county’s working budget is $17 million composed of approximately $8 million from Certificates of Participation (COPs), $5 million general fund contribution and $3.5 million in congressionally directed spending; a separate underfunded‑courts grant of $500,000 has been used for prior planning.
