City staff told the Recreation and Parks Commission on April 8 that the department will return with an updated municipal code ordinance to regulate so-called "specialty structures" such as bounce houses, inflatable event cubes and privately hauled barbecue pits used at parks.
Staff said the original ordinance—developed when bounce houses became common—requires permits, insurance and operational rules (for example, whether a generator will be used or if city power is requested). At the meeting staff said newer uses (including large inflatable "ice-house" cubes used for events) and recurring requests to tow private barbecue pits require broader language.
"We're gonna bring you back an update to that ordinance to take a look at, and then we'll have some verbiage in there that will kind of make it more inclusive of some of the things that are out there," staff said. The commission had no formal vote on the draft language; staff said a revised ordinance will return to the commission for review and eventual Council consideration.
Staff also confirmed that permit information and requirements are available on the city and department websites and that many recurring vendors buy annual permits and visibly display them during events so rangers can confirm compliance.
No changes were adopted at the April 8 meeting; the item was presented as a preview and staff signaled it will bring draft ordinance language for formal consideration at a later meeting.
