Recreation and Parks Commission recommends adding Jim Glines to city naming resource list

The Recreation and Parks Commission on April 8 voted unanimously to recommend that the City Council add the late community leader Jim Glines to the city—s list of names eligible for facility or park naming.
The commission—s vote follows a lengthy public comment period in which local nonprofit leaders, longtime community volunteers and residents urged the commission to honor Glines— decades of civic and charitable work in Santa Maria.
Community Bank of Santa Maria President and CEO Janet Silvera told commissioners that "he has been a true champion for this community," citing Glines— support for local nonprofits, youth programs and civic fundraising. Several other speakers, including representatives from the Boys and Girls Club and the Rotary Club of Santa Maria Noontime, offered similar endorsements.
Staff presented a resolution asking the commission to add Glines to the resource list from which the city selects names for facilities. Director Posada explained the process: the commission makes a recommendation and the City Council makes the final selection and decides which site, if any, will carry the name. Posada noted that the Smith/Enos community center building is already under contract to the Santa Maria Japanese Community Center, and that the undeveloped portion of that parcel (approximately 4.5 acres for parking/garden plus a roughly 3-acre basin, about 7 acres total) was not included in the staff—provided list because it remains under construction.
Commissioners then moved and seconded a motion "to add Jim Glines to the available opportunities for naming and add him to the resource list and move that to City Council for approval." The commission recorded a roll-call vote: Commissioners Lopez, Ramirez, Godinho, Diaz and Chair Carey all voted "aye." The motion passed 5-0.
The commission did not itself pick a specific park or facility; staff told commissioners they may include a site recommendation in the motion if they wish, but otherwise the recommendation will go forward to the City Council for final selection. Staff indicated the item will advance to the Council on the next available agenda, likely the May 2 meeting.
Clarifying details presented during the meeting included the council-allocated public-art funding discussion (separately handled on the agenda) and staff—confirmation that the Smith/Enos community center building name (Santa Maria Japanese Community Center) remains a contractual designation and the adjacent park area remains under construction and therefore was excluded from the current naming-site list.
