Board members voted to remove agenda item 9, the challenge hearing, and reschedule it to allow the department time to issue standardized notices that explain why a challenge was filed and what steps an elector can take to respond. The motion to amend the agenda was made and seconded on the floor and passed by voice vote with the chair noting unanimous support.
Board members said the postponement was prompted by the department’s determination that the standardized notices required by the department’s procedures were not sent to impacted voters. A member of the board told colleagues the action would give staff time to send the appropriate letters and ensure that electors receive the required information before the hearing is held.
The motion amended only the meeting agenda; no determination was made at the April 10 meeting on any underlying voter challenge. The board indicated the matter will return for consideration at the next regular meeting after the department issues the notices.
