South Cobb Regional Library expansion left out of state budget, local library officials say

A Cobb County library official told the Mableton council that the South Cobb Regional Library’s planned expansion was removed from the House committee’s FY26 budget and urged continued local advocacy and fundraising.
Jo Layman, regional manager for the South Cobb region of the Cobb County Public Library System, told the Mableton City Council that the House committee’s version of the FY26 budget did not include funding for the South Cobb Regional Library expansion.
Layman said two library projects that had been included earlier were “zeroed out” in the House version and that the expansion “will not have the expansion and renovations that we were expecting.” She read a message from library director Keith Schuurman thanking staff and community advocates for legislative outreach and urging continued support: “You have my enduring gratitude and praise. I imagine we will live to ask another day.”
Layman promoted upcoming library events and fundraisers, including a gala with author Jennifer A. Nielsen on April 25 and the library’s Love Your Library fundraiser, and provided attendance statistics for a recent six-week program she said served more than 20 families with more than 50 attendees each week.
Council members acknowledged the update and encouraged residents to support library fundraisers and advocacy with state legislators. No city action or funding commitment was made during the meeting.
