Board approves purchase of two electric buses and one diesel bus using EPA grant

The Casa Grande Elementary District Governing Board voted to authorize the purchase of two electric school buses and one diesel bus, using EPA grant funds and related financing described in the agenda.

Superintendent Dr. Lecke and transportation staff presented the item as a continuation of discussion tied to the energy contract and EV infrastructure. Dr. Lecke said the district sought to use an EPA grant to purchase the electric buses and that financing terms for the purchase were included in the agenda packet. "So we talked quite a bit about this in the context of the last agenda item, but just looking for approval of the district to be able to take advantage of the EPA grant purchased 2 electric buses," Dr. Lecke said.

Transportation staff member Darla answered operational questions from the board. She said electric buses typically return after morning runs and can be charged in 8 to 10 hours, which allows reuse for afternoon runs on appropriately routed routes. Darla cautioned that electric buses may not replace every route and that routing choices will determine which runs the vehicles can serve; she said the district will need to be strategic about deployment.

Board discussion was supportive. One board member thanked staff for pursuing electric buses and another observed that the district may need outside vendors for some repairs, noting that battery warranties and major repairs can differ from diesel-body maintenance.

The motion to authorize the purchase and related financing carried on a roll call vote with President Varela, Mr. Sibley, Mrs. Sisson, Mrs. Martinez and Mr. Cruz voting aye.
