Board recognizes students, staff and volunteers across three elementary schools

At the meeting the board and district leaders recognized students, certificated and classified staff, and volunteers from Palo Verde, Saguaro and COIL for monthly awards and highlighted student projects that influenced policy.
Superintendent Dr. Leckey and school principals presented student and staff recognitions for Palo Verde, Saguaro and COIL during the meeting.
Principals Carol Wrightson (Palo Verde), Mandy Curry (Saguaro) and Scott Raymond (COIL) identified multiple students for academic and behavioral recognition and highlighted staff and volunteer contributions. Examples included first grader Abraham Garcia and fifth grader Devon Jordan at Palo Verde; second grader Yasmine Villarreal and third grader Hailey Zigler at Saguaro; and learners McKenna Powell and Amelia (Emilia) Duarte at COIL. Staff recognized included behavior support professionals, classroom teachers and parent volunteers: Marcela Guerrero Potter, Eliana Canes, Lina Sarabia, Shelby Sorenson, Miranda Whitfield, Robert Baker, Miranda Fitzpatrick, and Jenny Marquez among others.
Principals described school-specific initiatives, including COIL's focus on early literacy, STEM and project-based learning and Saguaro's attendance incentive involving classroom pets. COIL principals also highlighted a student project that led to a policy revision regarding animals in schools; student Ellie spoke about rewriting the policy to allow licensed therapy dogs and thanked staff who supported the policy work.
Board members and the superintendent praised teachers, staff and volunteers for their work and reminded the community of upcoming district events, including a parent forum on Nov. 20 and the next board meeting on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m.
