Casa Grande district praises rising attendance, previews STEAM Fest and recognizes students and staff

Superintendent Dr. Lecky told the Casa Grande Elementary School District governing board the district has seen “some of our highest numbers of attendance this whole year” in recent weeks and urged families to support consistent attendance during state testing season.
Lecky highlighted district events and initiatives including the first annual STEAM Fest at Vilago, scheduled for tomorrow evening, where the district will showcase student art and STEM projects; selected student work will be displayed at the district office. He described the district's emphasis on integrating art with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEAM) and framed the district's work as part of a broader “destination district” improvement story being recognized beyond the region.
Board members and principals recognized students, staff and volunteers from Palo Verde, Saguaro and COIL for academic progress, service and school involvement. Palo Verde Principal Carol Wrightson described attendance-focused incentives and upcoming events including a spring fling dance and service project; Saguaro's principal described community-focused traditions, an annual carnival April 24 and an art night on May 8; and COIL Principal Scott Raymond said COIL is expanding grade levels (most recently adding kindergarten through seventh this year and adding eighth grade next year) and described an upcoming community learner showcase rescheduled for May 1.
Raymond also described a student participatory budgeting process at COIL in April that will let students vote on how to allocate school funds for selected initiatives, and previewed planned partnerships such as the Arizona Farm to School Collaborative and programming with the Arizona Science Center. Saguaro's principal credited schoolwide efforts—such as class attendance prizes—for improving daily attendance.
The board approved the meeting agenda and the consent agenda by voice roll call; each motion passed unanimously with President Varela, Mrs. Martinez, Mrs. Sisson, Mr. Stabley and Mr. Schute recorded as voting Aye.
The superintendent closed his report by noting statewide testing is underway for students across grade levels and stressing that “we want to make sure our students are given that opportunity.” The board adjourned after approving the consent agenda and noting the next regular board meeting is scheduled for May 13, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the same room.
