Middlesex County planning director highlights Vision Zero symposium, state cross-acceptance work and five road safety audits

Vijayan Rajrancy, the Board—s newly announced planning director (candidate), told the Middlesex County Planning Board that the county reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries at a Transportation Symposium held March 19 at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center.
The symposium featured a keynote address by East Brunswick native Jesse Singer, author and road-safety expert, and focused on the county—s Vision 0 Action Plan, Rajrancy said. "This was a very unattended event, mister chairman, and, I think it was a success, in its purpose," Rajrancy said.
Rajrancy also reported on the New Jersey State Plan Cross Acceptance Process. He said an initial public meeting for the state process was held March 24 and that three trainings for municipal representatives were held April 1 (3:00 p.m.), April 3 (10:00 a.m.) and April 3 (3:00 p.m.). He said 12 municipalities participated and that county staff and consultants will work with municipal teams to complete cross-acceptance response templates and edit policy maps provided by the state.
The planning director described five county road safety audits under way, listing the corridors as County Route 673 (Ernston Road) in Sayreville and Old Bridge; County Route 520 (Stelton Road) in Piscataway and South Plainfield; County Route 617 (Riders Lane) in Milltown and East Brunswick; County Route 653 (Amboy Avenue) in Perth Amboy; and County Route 529 (Plainfield Avenue) in Edison. Rajrancy said five open houses and pop-up events will be held through April to gather public comment tied to the audits, including an event on Stelton Road this evening at Island Howard Elementary School and events April 10 at Cedar Village Clubhouse (Riders Lane corridor), April 19 at Amboy Avenue (Easter Egg Hunt in Perth Amboy), April 24 at Edison Public Library (Plainfield Avenue) and April 26 at the Sayreville/Ernston Road location.
Rajrancy told the board that the road safety audits will be used as the basis for federal and state grant applications for corridor improvements: public comment will inform final recommendations and, once approved, the audits will support requests for funding.
Board members moved and seconded a motion to accept the planning director—s report; the chair called for the vote and the motion carried.
