City officials closed the D Street beach access staircase after staff and an outside structural engineer identified structural deficiencies that made the stair unsafe for public use.
City Manager Jennifer Campbell said engineers, a building official and a structural engineer from Docken Engineering inspected the stair and determined it is not safe. The stair was fenced and posted immediately; the city will bring an emergency declaration to the council's May 20 meeting to authorize expedited repair work.
Campbell said the city will engage its structural and geotechnical consultants and work with the engineering and building departments to prepare a repair plan; staff said marine safety has been notified and that alternate beach access via Moonlight Beach is available a short distance away.
Why it matters: D Street is a commonly used public beach access; a closure during spring and summer months affects residents, visitors and lifeguard operations. The city indicated it will pursue emergency repairs to reopen the access as soon as feasible.
Next steps: staff will return to council with an emergency-repair authorization and a proposed repair scope and timeline. In the meantime, the staircase will remain closed and fenced for public safety.
