The Bettendorf Community School District board approved a scope of work and a proposed budget of $700,000 for phase 0 of the Bettendorf Middle School addition and renovation project.
The board approved the motion by voice vote and roll call with the motion recorded as carried 7-0.
District staff explained that phase 0 is preparatory work to support phase 1 and will primarily relocate underground power lines, transformers and new chillers. Staff said the district anticipates about a month-long period this summer — mostly in July and part of August — when portions of the BMS building will be without power and air conditioning while utilities are moved. Roof work is expected around June and may overlap with some phase 0 activity.
Board discussion included a reminder that certain preliminary costs can be captured for bond financing if they fall within allowable look-back periods tied to issuance (board members referenced a look-back eligibility window). A board member asked staff to ensure those precursor costs are included when the district issues bonds.
The motion approved the phase 0 budget and scope to allow staff to begin the preparatory work for the larger addition and renovation program.
