Board authorizes superintendent to award low bids for two TK classroom expansions

The North School District Board on Wednesday authorized Superintendent Sai to award the low bids for transitional-kindergarten classroom expansion projects at Olive Drive Elementary and Veterans Elementary, with a 72-hour bid–protest review period required before contracts are executed.

District staff said Miller Construction served as the district’s construction manager and ran a widely attended bid walk. The board’s motion authorized the superintendent to execute contracts with the low bidders once the statutory protest window passed; trustees approved both authorizations by voice vote.

During the presentation, staff said the bids came in “right on target” with the district’s budget projections and that, barring any protests, construction is expected to begin around May and be completed before the start of the next school year. The superintendent asked trustees to authorize his office to award the low bid so the district could avoid calling a special meeting in the event no protests are filed.

The district did not read low-bidder company names or contract dollar amounts during the meeting. Staff noted that vendors who were not the apparent low bidder have a short period to request to review submitted bid documents and the subcontractor lists prior to awarding contracts.

The board voted separately to authorize the superintendent for each project; both motions passed with the chair’s announcement, “Motion carries.”
