John Stark students present ‘Student Voice’ committee, urge managed-time pilot and continued outreach

Students and faculty at John Stark Regional School District described a growing Student Voice committee and asked the school board to support continued meetings and outreach.
The Student Voice committee, presented at the board’s meeting by two student liaisons identified as Miley and Miles, meets monthly and includes at least one student liaison from each advisory group. “This gives students the opportunity to improve their culture by being engaged in the decision of the making process for their education,” Miley said.
Committee members told the board they have reviewed a proposed managed-time plan that would allow students who meet the eligibility threshold to leave study halls and use community spaces. Student presenters said the committee gathered input from advisories and forwarded recommendations to administration after assessing pros and cons.
Students and faculty indicated more than 50 students have participated to date. Presenters said the committee has discussed priorities including behavior, academics, facilities and extracurricular activities, and will collect advisory feedback on which items to tackle first. Faculty members thanked student organizers and cited the committee’s early success in increasing student engagement.
Students also reported collaborations with school clubs, including environmental club projects (composting and a small greenhouse) and a photography contribution for Earth Day displays. The presenters described a plan to maintain continuity on the student board by intentionally having sophomore, junior and senior representatives so experience is carried forward when seniors leave.
The board did not vote on any policy or resource request during the presentation; members praised the students and asked staff to continue support. Board members said they will share information about committee recruitment and encouraged the student liaisons to continue monthly meetings.
