Benton County planners solicit detailed feedback on comprehensive-plan outreach approach

Benton County Planning Commission members spent the bulk of their meeting reviewing a consultant-drafted outreach plan for the county's comprehensive-plan and development-code update, pressing staff to clarify maps, data sources and outreach methods and asking for clearer language to avoid terms that could alienate parts of the public.

The discussion focused on three priorities: (1) ensuring maps and data used to target outreach are clearly explained and do not omit unincorporated communities; (2) choosing wording that invites broader participation rather than alienating audiences (commissioners suggested alternatives to terms such as "inclusive" and "stakeholders"); and (3) designing outreach that gives decentralized rural communities time and tailored approaches to prepare and respond rather than relying only on one-off public events.

Why it matters: the comprehensive plan will provide the policy framework that guides future development-code changes and other county decisions. Commissioners said outreach that fails to reach underrepresented or unincorporated communities could skew the values and goals the plan records.
