The Community and Economic Development Committee confirmed multiple appointments to the Emerging Youth Achievement Advisory Council on April 14, endorsing candidates who committee members said will strengthen youth programming and cross‑sector partnerships.
Steve Mahan, introduced as deputy director of the Department of Administration, said he attended the inaugural council meeting as an ad‑hoc participant and described his interest in supporting youth programming and utilizing community partnerships. Committee members praised his participation and moved to confirm him after he spoke.
The committee also confirmed Dr. Brenda Cassellius as the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) representative to the council. Dr. Cassellius, identified in the meeting as superintendent of MPS with more than 33 years of experience, said she sought the appointment to leverage district resources and strengthen connections between the school system and city programs that serve young people.
Alderman José Perez, who nominated Cassellius, told the committee he and Cassellius met to discuss aligning data on academic, safety and wellness indicators so the council can prioritize programming that benefits youth across ZIP codes. Alderman Chambers urged Cassellius to meet with other council members and offered the council’s support.
Committee members moved both confirmations without recorded objections. Another nomination for Dr. Brad Krupa was held at the call of the chair.
