WFRC preview: bikeways.utah.gov to map statewide bike facilities and enable public updates

WFRC previewed an upcoming statewide bikeways web map designed for mobile use that will combine street-level bike facilities and trail/pathway data, allow public feedback and provide traffic-stress layers for planners and the public.
Bert Granberg of the Wasatch Front Regional Council presented a preview of bikeways.utah.gov, a statewide web map and dataset that will inventory and keep current bicycle facilities across Utah.
Granberg said the application will include separate GIS layers for on-street facilities (bike lanes, protected lanes, cycle tracks, etc.) and off-street trails and pathways; users can toggle route types and view a level-of-traffic-stress layer intended to help novice and cautious riders identify lower-stress routes. The product is mobile-first and designed for riders and planners to check existing facilities and to report edits so data can be updated quickly.
WFRC said partners including UDOT, UGRC, MAG and other MPOs will steward data for their areas. The committee heard that WFRC will solicit updates annually from jurisdictions and perform larger reviews following new aerial photography. The target is a public release in mid-May in time for Bike Month.
Granberg said the project intentionally avoided duplicating point-to-point routing (e.g., Google directions) and instead focuses on the state's complete inventory of bike infrastructure and an easy feedback mechanism to keep that inventory current.
