Commissioners lower speed limit on portion of County Road 490 West to 35 mph

DuBois County commissioners on Oct. 20 approved Ordinance 2025-13, lowering the speed limit on a portion of County Road 490 West from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour.
County highway staff told commissioners they conducted a speed study after the City of Jasper asked that its short section of the road be reduced from 45 to 25 mph. The highway department recommended 35 mph as a compromise, and Jasper agreed to match 35 mph on the portion inside city limits. Commissioners voted to adopt the ordinance after a motion and second; the motion carried unanimously.
The section affected lies west of Jasper, between County Road 150 North and Stewart Road, and the highway director said the area is becoming more suburban, which supported the recommendation for a lower limit. Commissioners said they supported maintaining consistent limits across jurisdictions to reduce driver confusion.
The ordinance was introduced and approved during the engineer’s report; county staff filed the ordinance as 20 25-13. No other changes to speed limits were proposed at the meeting.
The change takes effect upon the filing and adoption of the ordinance, and county staff said signs and markings will be updated to reflect the new limit.
