The Marion County Board of Commissioners approved Amendment No. 2 on April 9 to the construction contract with Farline Bridal, Inc., to replace the Meridian Road bridge over Abiqua Creek northeast of Silverton.
Ryan Crother, Public Works capital projects manager, told the board the contractor had access to used box beams in good condition that fit the project and offered a cost‑effective route to replace the bridge rather than rehabilitate it. Crother said replacement will meet current structural and seismic standards, widen the bridge, correct alignment and provide an estimated 75–100 year service life compared with about 25 years from a rehabilitation.
Crother provided budget details: the original contract amount was $1,260,084; the amendment increases it by $974,768.35, yielding a new total project estimate of $2,234,852.35. He said the county will use a state grant to cover an estimated $1,422,800 state share and an estimated $812,052.35 county share. Work could start once the contractor completes required public notifications, and staff said they had worked with nearby property owners about potential closures.
Commissioners approved the amendment by voice vote. Crother said the project would improve a limited set of river crossings in the county and yield a longer‑lived bridge for the Meridian Road corridor.
