Supervisors authorize staff to negotiate transfer of war memorial property to Lexington

The Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 14 authorized county staff to negotiate and finalize legal documents to transfer a parcel associated with the county war memorial to the city of Lexington.
County staff explained the transaction would involve several steps: a private landowner (identified at the meeting as Mr. Adamson) will transfer certain land to the county; the county will then convey the parcel containing the memorial to Mr. Adamson; Mr. Adamson will thereafter donate that parcel to the city of Lexington. The ultimate transfer will be subject to a condition that the memorial may not be removed from that property without the county’s permission.
County staff said final documents will be drafted and returned to the board for approval and for authorization for county staff to execute the transfer. The board voted unanimously to authorize staff to proceed with negotiations and to finalize the documents for a subsequent board approval and execution step.
County staff did not present finalized legal documents at the Oct. 14 meeting; the authorization given to staff directs them to complete negotiations and prepare the documents for board consideration.
