The Cedar Park City Council on April 10 authorized a public‑art commission to install a mural inside the Sacred Heart Recreation Center. Staff recommended selection of artist Jelena Barr from a field of about 58 submissions; the proposed design is an original, nature‑inspired mural with an interactive element painted using UV‑reactive paint and accompanied by UV light pens supplied for viewers.
Jacob Worth, assistant to the city manager and patron of the arts, said staff selected a high‑visibility hallway that leads to basketball courts and community rooms. The mural wall measures roughly 8.5 feet by 34 feet; the proposed commission cost is $7,000 and will be funded from the public‑art fund. The UV‑paint portions will be largely invisible under normal lighting but will reveal additional imagery when visitors use the supplied UV pens, creating an interactive experience intended especially for children and families.
Council approved the commission unanimously. Staff said they will notify the awardee and work with the artist to finalize installation timing; the project will include outreach and preserve the rec center’s operational needs during installation.
