The City of North Lauderdale commission on Tuesday approved a set of budget, procurement and policy actions and heard presentations highlighting the fire department’s new ISO Class 1 rating and steps to finish the city’s comprehensive plan.
The meeting, held April 8 in the City of North Lauderdale Commission Chambers, opened with a recognition from Fire Chief David Sweet of the department’s move to an Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 1 designation — the highest possible rating — and proceeded to a series of votes that included authorization for the city to pursue purchase negotiations for a vacant property on State Road 7, a first reading of an updated comprehensive plan, and the creation of a mayoral-run youth arts-and-music program.
The approvals come as staff and consultants press to complete pending projects and to position the city for future grant and redevelopment opportunities. Commissioners approved some items unanimously and others by narrow margins.

The motion passed on roll call. - First reading and transmittal of the City of North Lauderdale Comprehensive Plan evaluation and appraisal amendment (the city’s 2040-oriented plan), as read into the record pursuant to cited Florida statutes; roll call in favor. - Creation of the Empowerment Through Music and Art (ETMA) program under the mayor’s office and authorization of initial funding of $40,000 to launch a pilot, plus staff direction to identify sites and partners; roll call in favor. - A city sponsorship to provide football helmets for the North Lauderdale Panthers youth program — the commission approved a revised sponsorship…
