North Lauderdale reviews draft comprehensive plan update; staff to transmit amendments for state review

City of North Lauderdale commissioners on a workshop in April 2025 reviewed proposed updates to the city’s comprehensive plan and heard staff recommend transmitting the draft amendments to state and regional review agencies for comment.

The draft update, presented by Scarlett Hammonds, senior planner with the Corodino Group, revises multiple plan elements — including future land use, housing, transportation, recreation and open space, conservation, and infrastructure — and updates the city’s water supply planning to align with requirements from the South Florida Water Management District. Hammonds told the commission the plan “looks to 2040” and described the comprehensive plan as “a policy document … [that] provides the cities with policies. And this is to look into the future for a minimum of 10 years.”

Why it matters: The comprehensive plan sets the policy framework for future zoning, capital projects and intergovernmental coordination. Commissioners and staff said transmitting the draft to state and county reviewers is the next step; agency comments are expected within about 60 days, after which the commission would take a second reading and consider final adoption.
