City Manager George Brown to retire; council authorizes executive search with Mercer & Associates

City Manager George Brown told the City Council April 8 he plans to retire by the end of 2025 or in early 2026 and that the city has engaged Mercer & Associates to conduct a national search for his successor.
Brown said Mercer principal David Deutsch will interview council members and department heads in mid-April. The recruitment brochure will be completed in April and recruitment will begin in May. The firm will present an application pool to council by the June 9 meeting. Council is expected to select three to five candidates for interviews in July, with finalist interviews in August and a contract approval possible in September. Brown said he is willing to remain in an advisory capacity during the transition.
Council members thanked Brown for decades of service and said the schedule should allow for department director input and adequate time to evaluate candidates. The city attorney noted public records rules apply to the search, and the city manager and council discussed practical steps to gather confidential or anonymous input from department staff while complying with Florida law.
Council members asked the consultant to collect input from department heads and report back to council; members emphasized the council’s ultimate responsibility to set candidate criteria and make the final appointment.
