Colleyville board tables sign-variance request for Texaco and Eagle Transmission at 4602 Colleyville Boulevard

The City of Colleyville Board of Appeals on April 8 tabled a request for variances to Chapter 7 of the city’s Land Development Code that would alter the shared monument sign serving a Texaco station and Eagle Transmission at 4602 Colleyville Boulevard.
City staff presented the application but the applicants were not present. Staff said the request seeks variances for sign area, sign height, sign design, front and side yard setbacks and off-premises placement so the Texaco parcel could share a freestanding sign with the adjacent property. "Staff does recommend approval of the location of this sign due to the previously granted sign variance and available area for the placement of the sign," a city staff member, Miss Rave, told the board, while also saying the proposed design, materials and size did not fully meet Chapter 7 standards.
The existing monument sign at the location is about 10 feet tall and roughly 112 square feet, staff said, and had been granted a sign variance in 2012. The proposed new sign would change the appearance and reduce the surface area devoted to Eagle Transmission signage, placing that business’s identification at the bottom of the sign. Board members said they had no written consent from Eagle Transmission and expressed concern that the neighboring business might not have agreed to the change.
"I make a motion that we table it," a member said during the hearing. The board voted unanimously to table the application until the applicants or their representatives appear or provide written consent from affected property owners. Member Valerio, Vice Chair Cameraman, Member Deacon and Chair Frank Carroll voted aye; Member Schadl and two alternates were absent. Chair Frank Carroll said the item would remain on the agenda until the applicants request it be taken off the table or return to present the request.
Staff told the board it would contact the applicants before the next available sign-board meeting; the board noted staff cannot compel attendance but recommended the applicants appear or furnish written consent from Eagle Transmission if the new sign would reduce that business’s presence on the monument.
With no further business, the board adjourned the meeting.
