Bancroft Split residents urge board to fix feeder‑pattern split affecting neighborhood students

Two residents from the Bancroft Split area addressed the board on Feb. 12, urging trustees to revisit a split feeder pattern that they said again leaves a small neighborhood divided between elementary and middle/high school assignments.
Elena Halverson said her family has lived in the Bancroft Carriage Square area since 2012 and that her son Joaquin has progressed through Bancroft Elementary with the same group of children. Halverson described family hardships, including a spinal cord injury, and said continuity with classmates provided stability for her son; she said the proposed boundary changes threaten that continuity and asked why a previously corrected split again produced a lopsided (about 90/10) assignment in her area.
Foothill Middle School eighth grader Nicholas Zeliff said he and seven classmates from his cohort would not continue to Northgate High School with their peers because of the reassignment, and he described the social and academic opportunities he expects to lose — including band placement and access to a German language program at the school he is zoned out of. He asked the board to investigate why eight students were left behind in the feeder‑pattern change.
Board President Mayo noted the board cannot respond to public comments that are not on the agenda during the meeting. The speakers’ remarks were recorded in the public‑comment portion of the meeting and will be part of the public record.
No action was taken at the meeting; trustees did not discuss the feeder‑pattern item on the agenda during the public‑comment period. The speakers requested that the district provide an explanation and, if necessary, correct the split to preserve cohort continuity for affected families.
