The Streets and Sanitation Committee reviewed bids for approximately 45 downtown tree grates and recommended purchasing the cast-iron option. Committee members cited durability, thickness and a longer warranty as reasons to prefer cast iron over the least-expensive sheet-metal alternative.
A committee member said the budget includes $45,000 for the grates and that the city could purchase a portion of the grates this year and buy the remainder in the next budget year if needed. The cheapest bid was approximately $856 per unit for a sheet-metal style; the cast-iron option recommended by staff was about $1,373 plus shipping and includes a five-year warranty, compared with a one-year warranty for the least expensive option.
One committee member moved to purchase as many of the recommended cast-iron grates as the existing budget will allow and to begin installation; the motion carried. Committee members noted installation will be handled by city staff when time allows and that a future purchase might be needed if the vendor discontinues the style.
