South Gate schedules repairs for Frontage Road E after residents and students flag safety and trash problems

Residents and a group of graduate students urged the South Gate City Council on April 8 to accelerate repairs and maintenance on Frontage Road E, a heavily trafficked street used as the sole exit for Thunderbird Villa Mobile Home Park.
Three students — Naomi Sheffman, Nora Asadi and Valerie Saratilona — told the council the roadway has extensive potholes that damage vehicles, a torn fence along the 710 Freeway that provides easy access to the freeway and recurring trash and encampments. They asked the city to repave the road rather than continue piecemeal patching, to repair the fence and to increase patrols and enforcement against truck parking and illegal dumping.
Public Works answered during the meeting that design work for the Frontage Road project is complete, the city held a pre-bid meeting that day and it expects to receive bids in the coming weeks. Public Works said construction is anticipated to start within the next month or two. The department said the work will include pavement repairs and sidewalk fixes; staff acknowledged heavy truck traffic and said patches have failed in the past when rain and truck loads caused rapid deterioration.
Council members and staff also addressed related concerns raised by the students: Public Works will check that the online pothole-reporting link functions and confirmed that parking enforcement will continue to cite trucks that violate parking rules. The city attorney and city staff said some areas near the 710 Freeway are under state or county jurisdiction; staff said the city is coordinating with Caltrans and other agencies to remove encampments and fix the freeway fence where possible.
Public Works asked residents to report problems through the city app or website and said it will include Frontage Road on its near-term repair schedule. The department did not provide a firm construction start date beyond the one- to two-month window and said funding, bidding and weather remain factors in scheduling.
