Newton adopts 2024 International Fire Code with state fire marshal revisions

The Newton City Commission voted to adopt the 2024 International Fire Code on April 8, replacing the previous 2018 edition the city had adopted in 2021.
City staff and fire department leadership briefed commissioners that most proposed local amendments had been reviewed and approved by the Kansas State Fire Marshal. Some initial proposed local amendments were denied by the state fire marshal; staff said the municipality reserves the right to appeal those denials in the future.
Chief and fire staff said the new code includes revisions that will allow the city to take advantage of certain updates not present in the 2018 code. The commission approved the ordinance, recorded on the meeting transcript by its local ordinance identifier as “5156‑25.” Commissioners noted that future local amendments would follow the same state review and approval process.
One staff member observed that adopting the new code now does not prevent the city from later requesting changes to local amendments; commissioners said that appeals could be pursued if staff believed alternative local provisions were necessary.
The ordinance passed on a voice vote.
