Resident urges community action as Alvin ISD observes Child Abuse Awareness Month

She said almost two‑thirds of those reported cases involved sexual assault and that nearly 80% of child abuse goes unreported, statements she made to emphasize the need for awareness and training.
Brothers credited a school counselor, principal, teachers, law enforcement and the Brazoria County Alliance for Children with helping her family navigate a case. She urged the district and the public to give teachers and school personnel the tools to recognize signs of abuse and to make sure victims and families know their rights and available services. Brothers presented lapel pins to the board as a symbol of support for child abuse awareness.
Board members and the superintendent thanked Brothers for her advocacy. No board action was taken during open forum; the board president reminded speakers that public comment does not obligate the board to take immediate action but may result in referral to the superintendent for review.
