BVSD sustainability team reviews progress on Green BVSD plan and Seal of Climate Literacy

Key operational targets and progress: - Short-term emissions goal: a 14% reduction from FY2019 in building and operations emissions; staff said they nearly met that target in FY24 and aim for carbon neutrality by 2050. The district also retired 289 metric tons of CO2 via offsets tied to transportation contracts in 2024. - Energy-use intensity (EUI) targets: BVSD set a five-year goal to average 56 EUI across the district and a long-term goal of 30 EUI; staff reported the district remains on track but said further infrastructure investment will be needed to reach long-term goals. - Waste diversion: The district’s 50% diversion target is no longer attainable given market changes in composting; staff said BVSD expects roughly a 30% diversion rate this year — still about double the Colorado average. - Water use: Since 2008 BVSD’s water usage is down 30% while costs are up 73%; the district is building a water-management plan and seeking grants for smart meters.
Curriculum and student programs: - BVSD has introduced climate and environmental courses in the course catalog for middle and high school and worked with students to create eight elementary lessons in a student-developed curriculum model. - The Seal of Climate Literacy, piloted this year, will have about 20 graduates in the spring; the district presented an early graduate who completed an experiential portfolio. - Erin Greenwood highlighted Heatherwood Elementary’s transition to an environmental STEAM model and student-led high school climate summits; the spring summit will be April 26 at Boulder High.
