Long Beach proclaims National Library Month; library director highlights user numbers and intellectual‑freedom concerns

The Long Beach City Council issued a proclamation recognizing National Library Month and heard a presentation from Cathy De Leon, director of Library, Arts and Culture, about library services, usage and outreach.

Presentation highlights: Cathy De Leon said Long Beach Public Library operates 12 locations with a staff of more than 90 and reported that in fiscal year 2024 the library circulated more than 1,000,000 items (print and digital) and hosted more than 80,000 program attendees; 62% of program participants were ages 0–18. De Leon described library services ranging from literacy and digital‑skills help to safe spaces for vulnerable residents and said the library expanded the local recognition of National Library Week into a month-long celebration.

Intellectual freedom: De Leon cited data from the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom, noting that in a recent period the ALA documented 821 attempts to censor library materials involving 2,452 unique titles, and said the city has a record of defending “others’ right to read freely.” She invited residents to participate in a library passport program across 12 branches that awards a unique button at each site.

Proclamation and community outreach: The mayor’s office presented a proclamation and councilmembers joined library staff for a photo. Councilmembers thanked library workers and noted library services as critical community supports for youth, seniors and residents seeking information.

Next steps: The council accepted the proclamation. The Library continues outreach and programming during National Library Month.
