The resolution, numbered 2025-208, was offered, moved and seconded and passed on a roll-call vote. Commissioner Ocina, Commissioner Albrecht, Commissioner Romero, Commissioner Lodes, Commissioner Taylor, Deputy Director Marshon and Director Sorrow all voted yes.
Nancy Ridgeway of Upper Deerfield raised the settlement during the public comment period and asked whether the health department would cover the payment and how much the county had spent on legal fees. Ridgeway said the resolution described a payment of $310,000 and asked whether the health department would reimburse the county for legal expenses.
Director Sorrow said the health department is paying the settlement amount. Commissioners said they would provide more specific numbers at the next public meeting. One commissioner noted the underlying matter had been ongoing for more than five years and called the settlement “money well spent” given improvements to the work environment, while acknowledging the size of the payment.
The vote followed a motion and second. The board did not record any no votes or abstentions during the roll call, and the chair said no further action was anticipated at the meeting regarding the matter.
Resolution 2025-208 references the Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division, Cumberland County, docket number CUN-L-000438-21. The commissioners indicated staff would report back with detailed figures on legal costs and the apportionment among parties at the next meeting.
The county also adopted a separate closed-session resolution later in the meeting to discuss litigation and personnel matters; commissioners said they did not expect action to result from that closed session.
The board’s approval finalizes the payment described in the resolution; commissioners said details about reimbursement of legal fees and exact departmental charges will be provided publicly at the next meeting.
