Roselle Park board approves second-reading policies, personnel appointments and business items; HIB reports accepted

The Roselle Park Public School District Board of Education on Thursday approved a package of policy, personnel, education and business items, and accepted district HIB findings.

The board unanimously approved the second reading of district policy updates, voted to confirm multiple personnel actions including new hires, resignations and retirements, and approved standard business items such as bill payments and the treasury report. The board also voted to accept the district's reported harassment, intimidation and bullying incidents.

The approvals came after the meeting returned from a roughly 90-minute executive session. President Dr. Brittney Kirkland opened the public portion and led roll calls before the board took votes on consent sections covering policy, personnel, education and business matters.

On the policy second reading, the board approved the item by roll call with all members voting in favor. The personnel section was approved by roll call; the meeting record shows at least one abstention and one recusal on specific personnel subitems. The education section, which bundled items including a grant extension and program plans, passed after separate debate and votes on particular subitems. Resident Jen Jaskula urged the board to retain a parliamentarian and additional training after a contested vote earlier in the meeting, saying the board's procedures had created confusion: "Can we please do a training? ... bring in a parliamentarian and take a class." Jackie Garcia, another resident, spoke in favor of collaboration between the school district and municipal government during the meeting's community comment period.

The board announced that the proposed budget would be posted online the following day, with a Google form available for public feedback. The board also reminded the public that the next scheduled special board meeting (budget hearing) will be Thursday, April 24 at 6 p.m. in the Roselle Park High School auditorium and the next regular meeting will be Tuesday, May 20 at 6 p.m.
