Parks and Recreation previews spring–summer events; commission sets May 20 workshop

The Parks and Recreation Commission reviewed logistics for several upcoming spring and summer events and voted to hold a special roundtable workshop on May 20 to finalize event planning and discuss park capital improvements.
Courtney, a Parks and Recreation staff member, told commissioners the Easter “extravaganza and movie in the park” on April 12 will begin at approximately 6 p.m., with the movie (Despicable Me 4) scheduled to start about 8 p.m. She described the layout and age-group egg-hunt schedule: ages 0–3 at the first time slot, ages 4–6 on Field 2, ages 10–13 on Field 1 and ages 7–9 on Field 2. “We do have 20,000 eggs,” Courtney said, and staff will hold prize bags at a staffed table to reduce congestion after hunts. She said police and public works will assist with parking and that food trucks and a DJ will be on site.
The commission discussed parade participation for the Armed Forces Day event on May 17, which staff said will start at 10 a.m. with lineup at 9 a.m. Courtney said the parade already includes new participants this year — Steele High School planned to bring 50 ROTC cadets and Joint Base San Antonio planned to bring part of its bomb squad — and staff are reviewing the route and lineup to accommodate entries. Commissioners discussed whether to walk or ride on the commission’s trailer and noted the trailer traditionally is decorated the Thursday before the parade (May 15 if the parade date remains May 17).
Staff previewed other events: a junior fishing event on June 7 (the first full weekend after the pool opens), the pool opening on May 31 with summer hours afterward, and the Live Oak Summer Open disc-golf tournament in May. The commission also heard about a volunteer sign-up QR code staff are promoting; a commissioner asked that the QR code be featured on parade materials to recruit volunteers.
The panel voted to schedule a roundtable workshop to focus on events and capital improvements. Commissioner Daniel Buncher moved to set the workshop for May 20; Commissioner Alexis Scott seconded. The motion passed by voice vote after commissioners present responded in the affirmative.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn from Commissioner Daniel Buncher, seconded by Commissioner Angela Green; the adjournment carried by voice vote.
Less-central items mentioned during the discussion included the elimination of the adult (age 14+) egg hunt this year and a practice of holding back some eggs after organized hunts to accommodate late arrivals. Staff said park fields will be used to stage different age groups and that efforts to reduce congestion aim to keep families moving among fields and food trucks.
The commission did not take additional formal action on individual events during the meeting; staff were directed to proceed with event logistics and to prepare items for the May 20 workshop.
