Public works reports: CDBG sewer line bid, 70 service-line replacements start, rodeo gates installed

KAMAS — During the council meeting city staff gave department updates that included progress on a CDBG-funded sewer project, a planned mass replacement of old water service lines, installations at the rodeo grounds and arrangements for a May memorial-flag installation.
Scott (staff member) said the city is bidding a CDBG project that will replace an 18-inch sewer outfall from 100 West to an inlet structure and replace a 10-inch line from Main Street to just before 100 West. He said the project will also make a new connection at the intersection of 200 and 200 West to route flow from the south-eastern part of town through Grassy Creek rather than the older lines.
Scott told the council that Cowboy Concrete submitted a favorable quote for concrete work related to a memorial-flag installation, and staff expects the flags to be in place before the city’s planned event around Armed Forces Day (May 17). The city discussed inviting county officials and the press once timing and logistics are confirmed.
Public works staff reported that 70 service lines — many still on old steel pipe — will begin being replaced starting the next morning on 100 East, and the department aims to finish the replacements by the end of next summer if schedules and weather allow. The replacements are being done in advance of a state deadline to remove old steel service lines by 2027.
Parks staff reported the rodeo grounds received two new entry gates.
Police reported a quiet month with 36 calls for service, including 1 DUI, several welfare checks, agency assists and VIN inspections; a new officer was expected to start after completing military obligations on April 15.
Scott said road work planning continues, including slurry-seal projects and restriping that staff expects to complete this season. He and other staff recommended a May update from the memorial-flag committee to confirm timing for invitations and press outreach.
